At the Western Maryland 4-H Camp, the course was Portable Pumps & Water Use, which is designed to provide knowledge and skills to design, set up, operate, troubleshoot and shut down portable water delivery systems.
At the Garrett County Airport, a Helicopter Crewmember course was designed to provide students with all proficiencies of the tactical and logistical use of helicopters to achieve efficiency and standardization.
McHENRY — Garrett College was host to the Mid-Atlantic Interstate Forest Fire Protection Compact’s 2022 Mid-Atlantic Wildfire Training Academy last week.
This is the fourth year for the event at Garrett College, which trained wildfire firefighters from seven states.

Bob Hartlove serves as the training coordinator for the Compact. The purpose of the Compact is to promote effective fire prevention and the control of fires in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Collectively, the states are responsible for protecting more than 35,000,000 acres of woodland.
Besides Maryland, states include Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
The Compact coordinates the development and integration of forest fire plans, maintenance of adequate firefighting services by the member states and provides mutual aid in forest fire fighting.
Funding for the Compact comes from a grant from U.S.F.S State and Private Forestry and support from Compact members.
At the training, various levels of courses were offered both online and in person, and about 170 people attended this year.
The academy is operated as a real incident to further the experience for the firefighters.
During the event, over $5,000 in donations was raised for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

On the Garrett College campus, a Ground Support Unit Leader course was designed to prepare students to perform the duties of managing transportation plans, maintenance and other relative services at an incident.
At the Garrett County Airport, a Helicopter Crewmember course was designed to provide students with all proficiencies of the tactical and logistical use of helicopters to achieve efficiency and standardization.
Helicopters were also involved in the training last week.
Topics included aviation safety, aviation transportation of hazardous materials and crash survival.
